Just finished reading ” Brooklyn” by Toibin on my kindle. It was my first novel on the kindle. I made the print large as I felt my eyes were straining. Once I got going I could not put it down and finished it in one afternoon. It did start out as a slow read but I give it 3 carrots. This is the tale of a immigrant to Brooklyn and finding love, hardships, friendships, employment, education. I was somewhat disappointed in the end I must say. I think I might have dreamed up something far better for E. She should of had more of consequence for her actions it was sort of typical turnout. Then I realized I spent my entire afternoon and wanted some sort of surprise as a token for myself. Not sure if I like the Kindle or not. I kind of like holding on to books, and bending down the corners of the pages when necessary. They are mine to keep and hold and store in the library shelf in the office to review at another date.
My favorite thing as a kid was spending a Saturday afternoon at the library helping out librarian and dusting books on shelves or working on the ddc files or reading stories to little kids during story hour. The librarian…she had her hair in two divided braids that she put into two buns on the side of her head with always a large broach pinned into it. I wondered as a child if she ever poked herself with the sharp backing of the pin. Her face was gorgeous with just powder and lipstick. I miss her she taught me to love reading and books. I would rather be in a room with books than shopping at Lord & Taylors any day and you would never guess that about me. And I have always loved reading, writing and the smell that new and old books have. They do have a smell or maybe it is the ink.
Next read is “Bold Fresh Piece of Humanity” I will let you know how that one goes. There are numerous books I want to get thru this summer. I just re-visited Shindler’s List days ago…I love that DVD. I also viewed lately ” The Boy In the Striped Pajamas” that will change your thoughts and feelings for the afternoon. And I did view “Doubt” twice for a matter of fact. Being that I am sort of spiritual myself I wondered when it was was over if I had missed something because I felt sort of sadder than usual from this movie? Streep is fab as usual – great work and good acting.
More later as father time permits and household family obligations.
BTW it is very hot already in the southwest. Happy Summer. Get the sunblock out. Find your own good read.
